Workshop Diary - Digital Workshop, 1st to 7th April 2001

Day 4, Thursday 5 April

Hello everybody, just a quick call to let you all know what you are missing. This morning I woke up to a view of the sun rising over the Quiraing, and the waves gently breaking on the shores of Staffin Bay. I watched curiously at a sheep on the beach which was heading for the sea, only to realise she wasn't taking up swimming lessons, but had discovered the local delicacy dulse, alias seaweed. After a hearty breakfast of Scottish porridge and Sam's homemade bread, I joined my fellow photographers and entered the classroom once again hoping to grasp some basic knowledge of digital photography. Today we learnt how to manipulate black and white images using duotones and curves!!! Without Ian's excellent tuition we would literally be clueless.

This was followed by a cooking lesson at coffee time by Jo, who taught us how to cook chicken soup.

Eagerly we returned to the computer room, and began manipulating and printing out our masterpieces. I was pleasantly suprised at the variety of results that could be achieved. Despite being told to keep the folders small I clocked up 147mb of memory in one file, so it looks like I still have a long way to go.

After exercising my rusty brain cells and consuming vast quantities of the most delicious chicken soup, I retreated to bed for a well earnt siesta. Yet again I returned in earnest to the computer, each time becoming more and more addicted to this new found phenonemena.

Our teacher anounced a walk and visit to the Floddigarry for a well earned pint. He was shocked to hear silence and and no takers! We were reluctantly dragged out for a beautiful scenic stroll from the top road of the Quiraing down to the cemetery. Equipped with digital camera, and a licence to kill I was soon made aware of a WARNING SIGN " FOOT AND MOUTH PREVENTION AREA", and an order to step into a disinfectant blue container.

Caution!

Further along down the hill I spotted a waterfall and could not resist getting a closer look, but ended up stuck in the stream, with no pals in sight! Yoda had a similar idea, but drank the water instead.

Foot and Stream

After climbing out of the ravine, I spotted a natural line of sign posts and a mountain, this was neatly finished off in the camera with Ian walking on cue into the frame.

Ian

I was very appreciative of the breathtaking view from the Quiraing towards the distant snow capped mountains.

On our return to Quiraing Lodge I with a fellow conspirator were accused of making a musical movie, starring 2 Squashes(vegetable variety), myself, Jane, singing songs from the " Sound of Music " It was difficult to deny as the 2 squashes in question were smiling at us across the kitchen. Oh well it must be the SKYE air, mixed with the vino, the funloving atmosphere we have experienced since arriving on the beautiful island.

The Sound of Music

Next was the compulsary visit to the Flodd, which turned out to be a very impressive stately looking building, complete with flag, a spectacular view and a jukebox.

At the Flodigarry

2 ports later I was happy to return home for Sam's wonderful lamb curry topped with Mahdur Jaffrey's yoghurt with spinach and coriander.

AMEN. I LOOK FORWARD TO RETURNING TO THIS WONDERFUL PLACE.
