Design your own Photo Away Break
We have some weekends free between now and Easter.
Why not get a group of fellow photographers together, perhaps your class
or your club, or simply a group of friends or family and let us do all
the hard work.
We will collect you from Inverness airport or Glasgow International
airport, on Friday, then drive back to Quiraing Lodge arriving in good
time for the evening meal. There will be photo stops on the way.
On Saturday, Sunday and Monday we will take you to some of the best
sites of Skye, allowing you to stay as long or as short as you like
to achieve your desired photography. We will feed you with our excellent
home made food, or at carefully selected restaurants.
If you wish to use our darkroom facilities, our teaching skills or
to simply review work brought with you this will all be possible.
Available for groups of 6 or more: please discuss your ideas with us!

Improved accommodation
Immediately after the Christmas break, we will be starting work on
converting 3 rooms to en-suite (private facilities), and also making
a 4th new bathroom. Work will be completed by March.
Exhibitions
In 2004 we will be starting an exhibition programme, with mostly photographic
exhibitions by Sam and Suzy, of local subjects. Other exhibitions will
be themed to particular workshops. Our next newsletter in January will
list the first few exhibitions.
Meanwhile we are gradually extending the range of goods for sale -
much of our own photography, such as greetings cards, digital prints
(using the latest Epson 2100 printer), archival silver prints - these
will soon be available to view, and order, on our web site. There are
also ceramics by Linda Warrick, books and Suzy's jams and marmalade.
The Isle of Skye in December
It's a very quiet time of year now, with very few visitors. Even the
Christmas rush is not as evident here as in many parts of Europe and
the USA. Hogmannay remains a more celebrated time than Christmas. Be
warned if you are travelling here on January 1st and 2nd - almost everything
will be closed - 2 days of public holiday, and 2 days of recovery from
celebration!
There's very little light with sunrise after 9 a.m., and sunset soon
after 3 p.m. However the directional light with the sun always low in
the sky makes for some great photo opportunities. The weather is often
dramatic with fast changing skies, and a surprisiong number of calm
sunny days.
The long nights need not be full of darkness. On a clear night it
is remarkable how much light is given by stars in such a clean air as
here, and moonlight can be extraordinarily bright! We have even occasionally
witnessed a "moonbow".
We have recently had some remarkable displays of the Northern Lights,
Aurora Borealis. Lots of colours throughout the sky on 2 or 3 occasions,
fast pulsing light across the sky on another. There's often evidence
of the aurora to the north, but rarely the shows of recent weeks.
AND FINALLY..... We would like to wish you a Happy
Christmas and a peaceful 2004.
