Workshop Details and Biography
Beach Bound - Jo Berry
and Isabell Buenz
Monday June 1st to Saturday June 5th 2004
Found and recycled materials, automata, book binding – very and
totally mixed media!
“Texture for the senses”
You never know!

We want to teach some basic book binding/making to produce a working
sketchbook then go into some making skills and combine mine and Isabell's
different skills to create one off books that are made of alternative
materials and perhaps illustrate a phrase, story, feeling or
poem.
I envisage having books that are big with multi faceted pages with
opening and possibly moving parts.
We can use wire or found rope and net to bind.
Driftwood can be used as a cover.
We may look at typography and simple calligraphy techniques to combine
and illustrate a poem or verse with the making of the book.

We will make them based on the landscape or any thing anyone wants.
We will use found materials and combine them with the tin, using joining
methods etc.
Produce something amazing!

Presently
I am working as a teacher of Art & Design in Surrey. I am greatly
enjoying my job as I teach mainly Post 16 students who are really enthusiastic,
eager to learn and try new techniques.
I grew up in Felixstowe on the East Anglian coast.
Spending my summer holidays as a child at our beach hut, I would collect
interesting objects and take them home. I found great value and beauty
in natural materials, especially ones which had been shaped and formed
by the action of the sea.
I completed a Diploma in Graphic Design and an Illustration
Degree at University College Suffolk. This was near my home enabling
me to use the natural resources of the environment to build upon my
ideas, and to adapt and develop my skills. Being surrounded by boat
makers and local craftsmen and women also gave me great inspiration.
Automata makers such as Keith Newstead and Ron Fuller were influences
throughout my further education and on into my own making techniques,
and attitudes towards craftwork.
Continuing to make while teaching allows me to use
and develop techniques in the classroom. My experience of working with
both adults and children has encouraged me in my use of workshops as
a great vehicle for sharing ideas and inspirations. They facilitate
collective learning and development of skills and knowledge.
I like to think that my own work brings a little enjoyment and humour
to the eye of the beholder. I like to create little pieces of imagination.

PAPERMAGIC
Isabell designs and produces one-off and limited edition artist books
and paper structures
Her work is distinctive, often using unusual and surprising materials.
The combination of these materials with techniques such as printing,
photography, computer graphics and contemporary embroidery gives Isabell's
work a unique and fresh appearance.
As a facilitator, Isabell has an infectious enthusiasm for both the
development of creative ideas and the interpretation of those ideas
into reality. Her experience of working with groups spans over 20 years
and has resulted in an approach that is informative, professional but
above all fun!

While qualifying as an accountant in Germany in the late 70s, Isabell
realised that there should be more to working life than bookkeeping
and figures! As a result she re-trained as a counsellor and, in 1985
started to use expressive art as a means of counselling in a more personable
and innovative way.
After moving to Scotland in 1989, Isabell further developed her unusual
approach to counselling by starting 'Creative Dance' in Edinburgh, offering
sessions and workshops to individuals and groups focusing on having
fun in the process of self-discovery.
Since then Isabell has added other skills to her experience of expressive
art including painting, drawing, poetry creative writing, sculptural
work and printing.
Isabell produces and makes her books under the name of ‘Papermagic’.
Throughout her career as an artist she has always maintained a sense
of humour and strong personal connection to the work produced.
