Caroline Dear
"
I have been interested in natural materials and structures all my life
and I began to learn specific basketmaking techniques seven years ago
through specialist workshops.
"I became interested in the traditional
frame type baskets, which are indigenous to the Celtic areas and also
in working with local plants using ancient techniques to make new forms.
I started teaching basketmaking four years ago mostly from home but
also in the local arts centres. I exhibit and sell my baskets as well
as accepting commissions. Next year I will be having some baskets exhibited
in New York and I will also be opening my studio to the public.
"This workshop will give you an
understanding of four basic basketmaking techniques (coil, random, twine
and frame) as well as giving you the feel of working with a number of
different materials (willow, rushes, cane, heather, montbretia etc.)
You will get a chance to experiment and I encourage each person to explore
their own ideas.
"I have lived and worked on Skye
since 1986."
